“Me and White Supremacy: A 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism, Change the World, and

Become a Good Ancestor” – Layla F. Saad

“Me and White Supremacy” one of the most influential books of our time is written by New

York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author, Layla F. Saad an anti-racism educator,

international speaker and podcast host on the topics of race, identity, leadership, social change

and personal transformation.

“Me and White Supremacy” was first offered as a free self-published digital workbook in 2018

in an Instagram challenge and it was downloaded by over 100,000 people in only six months.

Since that time, her book and companion workbook have become a global phenomenon.

As a white woman who considers herself to be a liberal leaning leftist, who has spoken out

against racism my whole life, I thought there wouldn’t be that much for me to learn from this

challenge. Ignorant thinking on my part. This book is a gift to humanity.

Since our country was founded, we have been programmed to believe that white supremacy is

a reality. Ignorant thinking again. White supremacy doesn’t exist. However, because white

America has adopted this false narrative and passed it down for generations and generations,

as if it were reality, we now carry this programming and to various degrees are blinded by it.

We are oblivious to the impact and the devastating damage that white supremacy

programming has done to people of color in this country. This systemic programming impacts

our judicial system, our police, our military, our banks, and every institution we have. Our

system is geared to give white people privilege. Look at that.

White people can’t see the truth because we have a social disease called white fragility. We

think racism is something in the past and that we have nothing to do with it but it’s in the

present. Some of us don’t want to see the truth, others wish to erase the truth and rewrite

history, but I believe there are more of us who want to see an end to racism then not. What

most of us do not realize is that we are keeping systemic racism intact in our society because

we can’t see what we contribute to keeping it alive and we each do. We don’t know what we

don’t know and Layla F. Saad’s brilliant, compassionate, insightful book gently shows us a way

to explore that truth within ourselves.

What I realize as I work through the challenge is how painful it is to look back on our history as

well as to witness what is taking place in our country right now. This administration is targeting

the rights of people of color. There is no room for silence and complacency. To erase our

history, which the current administration is doing by removing Civil Rights exhibits in museums,

burning and removing books by black authors in schools and libraries, and removing the equal

opportunity laws that were created by both Democrats and Republicans to protect people

against racism, only points to how weak we as a race of people can be. We are going backwards

at a time when our survival depends on moving forward.

True power lies in being able to learn from our mistakes, change and grow. People of color have

survived and thrived despite being treated like second class citizens in our society. We have

much to learn from our fellow Americans but most white people cling to their denial and that is

why a racist like Trump was elected to office.

Transformation is possible for all of us. Do you have the courage to take on this 28 Day

challenge? I believe in you. You can do it. After you complete the challenge, buy the book for

your friend and family and encourage them to take the challenge.

Let’s obliterate racism, one person at a time.
